Retirement, the word even conjures up the thoughts of freedom, relaxation and travel. For the first little while, that freedom and relaxation will be all that you really need. Or so you might think. For some seniors, finally moving into retirement can be very disorienting and even unpleasant.

Before you get to your first day of actual retirement, you should spend some time planning ahead for what you’re going to do once retired. Let’s face it, you’ve been accustomed to getting up, having to be somewhere, and living a pretty structured daily life. When all of that suddenly disappears you might feel strange or even a bit lost.

Make a list of the things you want to do during your first six months of retirement. This list can include anything from chores or repairs around the house to travel around the world. You can put anything you want on this list, even if you don’t think it will really happen, because you’re going to go back and change things around several times before retirement actually arrives.

Take your list and sit down with a blank calendar. Go through the list and start penciling activities in during specific days, weeks, or months on your blank calendar. You can move things around as much as you like, or list things that will be every day or regular occurrences. You can make as many changes to this calendar as you like both before and after you actually retire. Nothing on here is required or set in stone; the idea is to set up some new structure to replace the structure you’re leaving.

Senior Travel For New Retirees

One of the most popular activities for newly retired people is travel. This can be anything from long the trips to other countries to short little single day excursions around your home. Think about the places you’d like to go and the things you’d like to do and start plugging them into your calendar. If the place you want to go will cost a lot of money, put it a little further out on the calendar so you have time to fit it into your budget. If the place you want to go is inexpensive or virtually no cost at all, you can plug it in anywhere you want.

Some seniors are nervous or unsure about traveling in retirement. They may worry about going someplace that’s too unfamiliar or be nervous about planning all of the details of the trip. If you’re feeling this way, a great place to start is with an organized trip. There are lots of different companies that offer trips and tours to just about any location you can imagine, and many of them are specially designed for seniors. These kinds of trips typically include everything you’ll need, such as airline reservations, transportation, sightseeing, and an expert guide. It’s a terrific way to get a taste for travel without worrying about all of the planning details.

Travel Doesn’t Have To Far Away

Even if you think you don’t want to travel, try thinking about the idea of travel in a different way. It doesn’t mean you have to take a trip, or spend a lot of money. Travel for some seniors means exploring the area around where they live. There might be a museum you’ve always wanted to see but never had the time, or maybe a local attraction that has always been too crowded on the weekends when you were off work. Now that you’re retired you can go visit that museum and spend all day if you like, or go visit that local attraction on a weekday or during the off-season when it’s not so filled with people.

Wherever it is you choose to travel and whatever it is you decide to do, there are a few extra precautions seniors should take. Always carry your identification with you as well as contact information for your family or a friend. If you take medication on a regular basis be sure to bring that along with you in the original prescription container. Make sure you have enough medication to last the duration of your travel plus a little bit extra just in case you’re delayed for some reason. Put a few snacks in a carrying bag and even a change of clothes if you like, as well as an extra sweater or coat.

A terrific senior travel opportunity and vacation is with Elderhostel. It is a program designed especially for seniors that combines opportunities to travel, learn new things, have fun, and enjoy once in a lifetime experiences.

What is Elderhostel?

Lots of different companies offer Elderhostel services, but the most traditional and reputable ones are based on a non-profit approach. A great example of this can be found at www.elderhostel.com, the comprehensive web site of the leading Elderhostel provider. The idea of Elderhostel is really very simple; programs and activities are put together for adults age 55 and older that allow them to combine vacation, travel, and learning in an interesting and cost effective way.

Elderhostel programs are much like organized tours, but with an important difference. In Elderhostel programs you will have opportunities that you may not have if you’re just a vacation tourist. For example, you could participate in a program at a local university that allows you to study literature with a faculty member in small groups where you get personal attention and access to their expertise. Throughout the program you would also have opportunities to interact with other participants, explore that area you’re visiting, and stay in locations where you’re not just a visitor but a welcome guest.

Elderhostel Choices

You can literally find thousands of choices in Elderhostel programs. They range from two or three day programs to some as long as three weeks or more. You can search for an Elderhostel program by continent, by country, by topics of interest, by activity level, by date, and many other categories. Let’s take a look at some examples of the variety and scope of the Elderhostel programs available:

Ultimate opera – This program takes you to New York City where you will enjoy opera performances by leading opera stars, plus get a chance for a behind the scenes look at Lincoln Center and what it takes to put on an opera. You’ll also get a chance to sit down with opera experts and performers to talk about all aspects of opera music, composition, and the like.

Adventure Cruise

There are a number of these programs that take you to your choice of many different cruise destinations. You can go to the tropics and learn about the plants, animals, history, and geology of the place you visit. Or, you can travel some of the world’s most famous Rivers to experience the heritage, culture, and unique communities that flourish along the river banks.

Food and Wine

These are among the most popular and interesting programs because you can combine learning about specific areas, countries, and cultures with the pleasure of experiencing some of the best food and wine available in those places. Your activities might include special sessions with a winemaker, a hands-on lesson from a chef, or an opportunity to see fresh ingredients as they are grown and harvested.

Sports Activities – Tailored To Suit Your Needs

Hundreds of different Elderhostel programs are focused on sports activities. From golf, to cycling, to hiking, to water sports, and beyond, you can participate in a sport while also on a learning adventure. You don’t have to be an expert at a sport, though, because programs are tailored for the needs of many different skill levels.

Requirements for Elderhostel

The requirements for participating in an Elderhostel program are not very complicated. They are for the senior traveler that is at least 55 years of age and have an interest in exploring the world around you. Some programs require you to have a certain level of physical fitness, but the majority of them can accommodate nearly anyone with a physical limitation.

Elderhostel programs are great for senior traveling, whether you are single, going as a couple, or going as a small group. Activities and accommodations offer enough options to meet your needs whether you are traveling alone or with others. Plus, as you participate in the program you’ll be interacting with other seniors who have similar interests and a desire for adventure. Many people leave an Elderhostel program having made new friends and friendships with others from all over the world.

You might be dreading the day that you turn 65 because this is the time when you will officially be considered a senior citizen, and therefore old. What you probably don’t realize is that being a senior citizen opens countless doors of opportunity that you didn’t have during your younger years. For instance, your new status now allows you to avail of cheap travel packages for seniors that will let you travel all over the world at much lower prices. All you have to do is present your senior citizen card and you will automatically be qualified for huge discounts and special deals.

On the average, travel companies offer these cheap travel packages for seniors to people who are 65 years old and older, but some companies are more generous, allowing people as young as 60 or even 55 years old to enjoy some kind of discount as well. There are even sweeter deals if you are traveling with a group, such as your family or friends, who may or may not be senior citizens themselves.

While cheap travel packages for seniors are offered throughout the year, you can save even more money by planning your vacation during the off seasons. This will be much easier for you now that you have retired and no longer have work schedule conflicts to think about. In addition to the cheaper rates, traveling off-season will also allow you to enjoy your destination more because of the thinner crowds.

There is a wide range of cheap travel packages for seniors available, and in order to avail of the biggest possible discounts, you might have to make a few sacrifices in terms of luxury an convenience. For example, going on a flight that leaves at three in the morning will save you a few dollars rather than taking the 9am flight. You can also cut expenses by booking a regular hotel room and giving up the comforts of a suite. By eliminating these luxurious but really unnecessary amenities, you will be able to save a considerable amount.

The one thing that you have to beware of when choosing cheap travel packages for seniors is closing a deal with dubious agents. You have to make sure that the company will honor its refund policies in case emergencies arise, preventing you from going through with your vacation.

If you are interested in vacationing aboard a cruise ship, but you are worried about the cost, you don’t necessarily have to be. All-inclusive cruise ships are cruise ships where just about everything is included. The cost of your drinks, food, and entertainment are often taken care of. If you are wondering whether or not you should book reservations aboard a traditional cruise ship or an all-inclusive cruise ship, you are not alone. A large number of senior travelers wonder the same thing.

When it comes in all-inclusive cruise ships, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages. To determine whether you could benefit from an all-inclusive cruise ship, you are encouraged to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. After you have considered each, you are encouraged to make a decision. If the advantages outweigh the disadvantages then an all-inclusive cruise ship may be just what you need and visa versa.

The biggest advantage of all-inclusive cruise ships is that most of your needs are taken care of. As previously mentioned, most all-inclusive cruises cover food, drinks, and entertainment. If you are interested in drinking a large amount of alcohol or feasting on the amazing onboard food, you may be able to do so free of charge. You may also be granted exclusive admittance into movie theatres and video arcades.

To many, having foods, drinks, and entertainment provided free of charge sounds too good to be true. In some cases, it may be. While many of your food and drinks are included in an all-inclusive package, not all are. It is possible that you may be required to pay for your alcoholic beverages. There are some cruise ships where alcohol beverages are included in the package, but on others it is not.

When it comes to food, your food at a sit-down restaurant may be provided free of charge, but your snacks are typically not covered. This often includes snacks or small meals purchased at onboard specialty shops and vending machines. If your snacks and small meals are not covered, you can prevent the extra expenses by eating a large meal. You may also be able to save money by bringing your own snacks onboard, if the cruise ship allows it.

As mentioned above, entertainment is often included in an all-inclusive cruise ship package. As with food and drinks, the entertainment is often limited. It is likely that you will gain free admission into a dance or ball, but you will not be able to gamble free of charge. If you are interested in gambling aboard the ship’s casino, you will have to come up with your own funds.

When it comes to the cost of an all-inclusive cruise, there are many senior travelers who get confused. The cost of an all-inclusive cruise may seem high, but it is often that way to cover the cruise line’s expenses. For many individuals, the cost of an all-inclusive cruise is a great value. To determine whether or not you will save money aboard an all-inclusive cruise, you need to estimate your cost of food, drinks, and entertainment aboard a traditional cruise. Simply by comparing the two, you can easily determine which cruise package offers the better deal.

The advantages and disadvantages of all-inclusive cruise ship vacations are important. By examining each and comparing them to what you want and need out of your cruise, you can easily determine which cruise ship vacation package is right for you.

Just because you are in your advanced years, does not mean that you have stay at home, you can still enjoy life to the fullest. If you want to travel, go ahead. You deserve to be out there enjoying yourself. However, since you are no longer as young as you used to be, there are a few things to consider if you want to travel. To help you enjoy your trip, here are some senior travel tips for you.

Senior Travel Tip #1

Before you go on vacation, it would be best to consult your doctor regarding the kind of activities that you should undertake. When it comes to senior travel safety tips, seeing your doctor before you embark on a long trip is very important. Always bear in mind that you are no longer as strong as you used to be and it can be very costly to get sick while traveling. If you are on a restrictive diet or have existing ailments, you should talk to your doctor about your plans to travel. You should also ask your travel escort to be with you when you talk to your doctor, so that he or she will have some ideas as to how to take care of you during your trip.

Senior Travel Tip #2

You will need a few extra things during your travel, so you need to pack wisely and lightly. For instance, shampoos, toothpaste and the likes, you need to take only small packs that are enough to last the entire duration of your trip. Do not bring your entire collection of soaps and shampoos with you.

Senior Travel Tip #3

Carry a small bag where you can put all your medicine and other important things with you when you travel. You need to keep your small bag with you all the time, so do not make a mistake of checking it in at the airport. You don’t really know when you are going to need your medicines, so please be careful to keep them with you all the time.

Many times seniors on trips are not prepared for the many different ways things can go wrong and what they can do to prevent some of their own self-imposed delays. When tour companies are sponsoring a trip aimed at senior citizens, they usually offer a travel advisor for seniors, that can bring attention to some of the issues that elderly travelers may not be familiar with. While frequent fliers may have a good grasp on items that are banned from being taken on board an airplane, some seniors may not know that the cup of coffee they were just overcharged for in the airline terminal, will have to be left behind.

Electronic devices may not be a big issue for seniors, but they should be, as more and more elderly travelers have a cell phone tucked into their pocket and some may even have an electronic game packed in their carry on suitcase. The size of the carry on may also need to be addressed by the travel advisor for seniors, just because it does not weigh much, does not mean it will fit in the overhead compartment, or under the seat.

Knowing what to pack and how to make it more convenient, is another topic often covered by a travel advisor for seniors. This can be useful if the trip is going to take more than one day and having items easily accessible during short stops can make life easy, rather than having to empty the suitcase, just to find a pill bottle.

Advice Can Prove Invaluable On The Road

Personal protection is also covered in talks by a travel advisor for seniors, as they hope to make sure the travelers remain free from personal attacks. To ensure their personal safety against robberies and other types of crime, makes the trip more enjoyable. Covering such issues as not having all of their money, credit cards and other valuables in one place, can prevent the tragic loss of everything they own, in the event of an attack.

Depending on the age and mobility of the individual, a travel advisor for seniors may also recommend they do not drift off on their own. It is easy to get lost in a strange location and it is becoming more common for elderly travelers to be taken advantage of. Knowing which areas are safe, as well as reducing the possibility of getting lost in a strange town, are important to remember.

Seniors traveling independently are in for an exciting and confidence building experience, if they plan their trip correctly. Seniors today tend to be more active and healthier than previous generations. Independent travel for seniors is very popular and world travel is near the top of the list for many senior people.

Destination

Once you decide on your destination, make sure you do your homework. Questions you should ask include, What’s the weather going to be like? What season is it? Will I need a passport? Should I buy travelers insurance? What are the religious and political environments? How will I get around?

These are all good questions for you to be answering before you depart. If you don’t have any traveling experience, you might want to make your first trip a little shorter and closer to home, so your travel experience is successful.

Tour groups

A lot of seniors choose group tours, designed for independently traveling seniors, especially if the trip is their first. By doing this, they are able to gain travel experience and confidence in themselves.

Sports, religion and history are all popular theme tours for independently traveling seniors. You may have such a great time on your first “single friendly” tour, that you might never make a trip by yourself.

Going Out Of The Country

For any senior traveling independently out of the country, safety is a major consideration. Seniors should register their travel plans with the state department. This will make contacting travelers easier if there is a family emergency, or if there is a crisis where you are traveling.

In accordance with the Privacy Act, information on your welfare and whereabouts cannot be released to others without your express consent.

Check with your medical insurance companies to see if your policies will be in effect where you are going. Make yourself familiar with the local laws and don’t wear a lot of expensive jewelry, or carry a lot of cash to make yourself a crime target.

Local Currency

Checking the value of the local currency in relation to the U.S. dollar is something that is often overlooked by the independently traveling senior, until it is too late. Learning a few words of the local language will help when bartering with the local vendors. Happy traveling and good luck!

Seniors who travel with medicine need to take extra precautions to make sure their medicine travels with them. Some seniors can’t travel without medicine, so it is essential that seniors learn how to label and pack their medications, so they will be allowed to take them.

Air Security Regulations

Airline security regulations can change at any time, so consult security regulations at the airports you’ll be flying in and out of. Generally speaking, seniors may travel with medicine in prescription bottles, as long as the name on the prescription matches the name on the senior’s boarding pass and as long as the prescription is for pills, tablets or capsules.

That’s right; seniors traveling with medicine in gel or liquid form – including insulin, cough syrup and creams, are going to have some trouble getting through security, so they should allow even more time than they ordinarily would for air travel.

Contact The Airline Ahead Of Time

Seniors traveling with medicine in liquid or gel form should contact the airline well in advance of their flight. They should get a letter from their physician verifying the prescription and send that letter to the airline, along with the date and flight number of the senior’s scheduled flight.

Seniors taking medicine on travels should be prepared to have their medicine inspected before they board any plane. Seniors should be sure to have a copy of their prescription or letter from their physician ready.

Should Traveling Seniors Check Their Medicine?

For years we have all been told not to pack our medication in checked luggage. With today’s regulations, however, seniors must wonder whether they would be better off packing their liquid or gel medication in their luggage. The answer is still “no.”

Medicine packed in checked luggage is subject to being stolen by any number of workers who handle the bags from one location to the other. If the senior’s luggage gets lost, he or she will have to do without their medicine until the bags are found.

Carry A Backup Prescription

Before traveling, seniors who need medicine should ask their doctors for an extra prescription. If worse comes to worst and the senior’s medicine is lost, stolen, or confiscated by airport security, the senior can take the prescription to a pharmacy at their destination and have the prescription refilled.

Nonprescription Medication

Seniors traveling to U.S. locations should consider leaving non-prescription medication at home and buying new supplies when they land at their destination. The cost of buying a fresh supply of the medicine is minimal compared to the hassle and inconvenience of having the medicine inspected and questioned.

Today’s seniors are more active and healthier than previous generations. They go on vacation to experience new and different activities. Today’s seniors don’t want to sit by the pool and relax. They want to snorkel, surf and go sightseeing. Any senior travel guide you publish must reflect these generational changes. or it will surely fail.

Seniors Are Wired and Online

Today’s seniors use their computers and the Internet to research travel destinations, make travel reservations and purchase tickets for travel and entertainment. They take vacation pictures with digital cameras and share photos online at sites like Flickr and Facebook.

Any senior travel guide that wants to capture the attention of these senior technology gurus, must have an online presence. A senior travel guide web site could email a newsletter to its senior customers, but it would be better off establishing a web-based senior travel guide, making the site rich with content and directing traffic to the site.

Content For An Online Senior Travel Guide

Your online senior travel guide should include plenty of articles about senior travel destinations. Seniors like to go to places where they can play golf and participate in water sports by day and go out for fancy dining and dancing at night. Resorts are excellent senior travel destinations, so be sure to include lots of articles about golf resorts and dancing in your senior travel guide.

Cruise ships are popular with seniors, so be sure your senior travel guide web site contains lots of articles about different cruise ship lines, different cruise ship plans and destinations travelers can reach on 3-day, 5-day, 7-day, 14-day and longer cruises.

Seniors are safety and security minded. A senior travel guide should be loaded with traveling safety tips. Seniors want to know what parts of certain cities they should avoid, so they don’t accidentally wander into a high crime area. They want to know which hotels have the highest safety ratings and which cities are notorious for travel-related crime.

Seniors like to travel with their pets. For some seniors, their pets are also their companion animals, assisting seniors who have vision or hearing problems or limited mobility. Today’s senior travel guide should include articles about which travel
